Sony Cyber shot DSC TX5

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 digital camera is a slim, stylish pocket digital camera that has a secret: It's waterproof. The Sony TX5 is based around the combination of a 10.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor and a 4x optical zoom lens. The Sony TX5's sensor is what's known as a backside illuminated (BSI) design, meaning that its circuitry is placed on the non-light-gathering side of the sensor, allowing the maximum area of the sensor's other side to be devoted to light gathering. This should translate to higher sensitivity, and to reduced noise levels when compared to a non-BSI sensor for the same sensitivity. Actual focal lengths vary from 4.43mm to 17.7mm, equivalent to a range of 25 to 100mm in still image mode.

We love the actual physical control dial and gas-gauge-style memory and battery indicators up top of this 12.2-meg digicam, but its wide 24mm lens, ultrabright, three-inch active-matrix OLED display, and HD video are the real sells.

Everything on this Pentax falls readily beneath finger or thumb which makes for swifter overall operation; this is down to both sufficiently large controls, a smaller form factor than a DSLR proper and also the fact that Pentax has not overburdened the X90 with extraneous buttons.

Olympus SP 800UZ

Announced in the run-up to PMA, the Olympus SP-800UZ is one of only two digital cameras in the world to boast a 30x zoom lens (the other one being the Fujifilm FinePix HS10, which was unveiled on the exact same day as the Olympus). On the SP-800UZ, the lens covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 28-840mm. Other highlights of the camera include a 14-megapixel sensor, a 3-inch wide-screen LCD monitor, 720p HD movie recording capability, mechanical image stabilisation, high-speed continuous shooting at various speeds and resolution settings, and 2GB of internal storage plus SD card compatibility.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC FX66

The Lumix DMC-FX66 is a 14.1 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera from Panasonic, set to be released in February 2010. This slim camera features the “Venus Engine VI,” which Panasonic claims allows for faster operation and reduced noise when taking photos. Start-up time is approximately 1 second; ensuring snapshot opportunities are less likely to be missed. With a 5x zoom and an ultra-wide-angle lens, average users should find enough flexibility with this Lumix to perfect their shots. On the back of the camera users will find a 2.7” LCD screen for previewing and reviewing content. Casual photographers will likely enjoy the ‘Happy Mode” option, which automatically applies a vivid color filter to photos and video. Up to 720p resolution movies can be recorded. The DMC-FX66 is compatible with both SD and SDXC memory cards. Including the rechargeable battery, the complete package weighs 5.11 ounces

It will do fine for general outdoor photography, although you may want a longer zoom if you want to shoot animals from a distance.

Pentax Optio E90

The E90 is the entry-level unit in the series and, in fact, the dullest as well, which is evident by its lackluster design. On the bright side, the E90 is also the cheapest, but sit till delivers everything needed from a basic compact camera: a 10MP sensor for high-quality still captures; VGA video recording; and SD/SDHC memory expansion. Additional features include a 2.7” display, USB/AV connectivity, and two color options: red & black. Unfortunately, the E90 relies on conventional AA batteries.
